Belgrade Forest Landscape Project

ENHANCEMENT OF AN INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE THROUGH CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION

Belgrade Forest Landscape Project

The Belgrade forest in the northeast of Istanbul forms the green lung of the city.

However, as the city is growing, a third bridge over the Bosporus is built and the biggest airport of Europe is planned. As more and more trees are cut, the air quality in Istanbul is getting worse and worse. Moreover, coal mining industries changed the natural landscape in the north of the Belgrade forest and changed the natural topography through embankment into the sea.

The aim of the project, which is situated in a former coal mining area, is, to rethink existing elements of the landscape, and the people together. Through the use of synergies as equal protagonists, the artificial distorted landscape can be revalued and especially the people living in Istanbul should become more and more conscious about the forest and the landscape in their back that is supplying them with fresh air. This happens by combining local water buffalos with the historically established practice of the Turkish bath, the Turkish bath, as a social and economic reference.

The Belgrade Forest project was an experiment, a design thinking to obtain a successful relationship between human beings, the natural users (buffalos) and the Belgrade forest.

IN THIS PROJECT,

the forest, water, grassland, flowerbeds, and buildings are designed over the landscape like a carpet. The whole project is developed from a structural center towards the outside. In this way, the landscape becomes the connecting element between the spatial spaces, the forest and the grassland as well as with people and water buffalos. They are the users and designing actors.

This project also includes all the necessary structures to manufacture Buffalo products and selling them on-location.
